Chapter Fourteen

“How much you want to wager that’s their van right there?” Stone asked as he drove past the plain, white passenger van and selected a parking space several spaces down and in the opposite row. The second SUV pulled in beside them.

“Pile out,” Stone ordered. “We’ll be with you in a sec.”

“If we knew for sure, we could sit on it and they’d all be sitting ducks when they came back in,” Renfrow commented. “I’ll get intel to run the plates.”

“You heard Cobern,” Stone replied. “He wants us to shut them down yesterday. Sitting on that van won’t help.”

“Yeah. I know. I’m still gonna run the plates.”

“They’re from New Mexico. That van has Tennessee plates,” Stone pointed out.

“Because of my college education, I see things in a broader perspective, Jarhead,” Renfrow grinned. “Only some of them are from New Mexico. Norwich is from Tennessee. Maybe the idiot rented that van using his own name.”

“Touche,” Stone laughed.

Only minutes after sending the message, Renfrow received a response. “Plates came back from a rental agency in Cincinnati.”

“Guess you should have taken my wager again, huh?”

Renfrow shrugged. “So, you want to split the team? Half go east with me and half go west with you?”

“Probably our best bet at this point. Who you want with you?”

“Hold on a sec. I just got another message from intel.”

Renfrow studied the message. “We got a name and a possible exchange location for the skunk scent trader.”

“Great. Where we headed?”

“Sit tight. Exchange probably takes place here.”

“Better lucky than good,” Stone laughed. “So, do we just start asking people what there name is?”

“Nope. They sent make, model and license plate number for the person who buys it.”

“Hmmm. Two for the price of one.”

“Let’s spread out the team, find the car, and then sit tight until somebody shows up for the trade.”

Jen and Caroline left as one team to walk toward the restrooms, and then make a circuit along the other line of cars. Guy and Jarvis strolled together, talking in the other direction and made a loop around the comfort station.

“Nothing,” each reported in turn.

“We’re either too early or too late,” Stone observed.

“We’re too early,” Renfrow responded with confidence.

“What makes you think that?”

“They were just collecting it this morning. It will take the guy a while to walk out of there.”

“So, we watch for the buyer’s car. Where’s the buyer come from?”

“North Carolina plates, so I’m guessing, North Carolina,” Renfrow quipped.

“Smart ass.”

“They probably won’t meet up in this parking lot,” Renfrow said after a few minutes. “Let’s get out the map and see where the meet could take place on this side of the border.”

After spreading out the map, they realized that the buyer could meet the trader at any of several points without coming to the parking lot at Newfound Gap.

“Okay. We have a lot of possibilities, so we’ll need some more luck,” Stone observed. “We’ll leave somebody here to watch the road. The buyer will have to come past here if he’s going to the Tennessee side to make the trade.
